I think by this time, most all of us have experienced battles that have concluded differently than they should have. This post (hopefully) is dedicated to helping MintMan locate the fundamental problem in the engine. Because, what's the point of being victorious in battle if it will lead to your defeat?

For instance... I lost two battles tonight that I don't believe I should have. One was at the Wildscape to Lymfada (please correct me if I'm wrong- any feedback would help to correct the problem), and the other was at the Sanctuary to draco, after he had played all of his troops and I had a 3 tile and one monster lead (Foshi: Tiles 33, played 9, beaten 7, winning; draco: Tiles 30, played 10, beaten 8, losing).

I hope that by creating a thread for this problem it can be resolved easier. I know from my programming experiences that many examples are sometimes needed to find the source of a problem. Please be as detailed as you can, especially if another member's posts collide with your own. Conflicts can lead to a targeting of the problem.

And finally, don't expect land to be "refunded" because you complain (or taken away if you admit a false victory), and don't try to gain land by lying. The only way we can resolve this problem is to be honest.

And the reason you didn't add this to the "Last-Minute Acts" topic where these things have been discussed for some time now is...?

The reason was to bring this problem to the forefront... as well as to collect many cases in one place, instead of sifting through five pages of stuff (most of which are completely irrevelant to anything). Is there anything wrong with trying to help out, or am I always going to be ridiculed for my efforts?!?

And Dragon Kirby, please elaborate on your "Lost and Confused" accusation. The problem is that MintMan's logs have not matched the results we see, and the result is sometimes a victory for the loser. Somewhere between the data that we see on our computers and the data that the scripts interpret for victory/loss is a discrepancy. This topic is designed to collect reports of such problems to both verify and eliminate the problem.

If you haven't experienced the problem, then you needn't remark on it, let alone insult me. I am absolutely sure that I won my battle with draco (he had played all of his troops, and I was winning). I wouldn't have posted in the first place if I were "Lost and Confused."

Wow, being quite liberal with our fancy vocabulary aren't we? I was talking to LE about when he said this problem was being discussed in the "Last-minute acts" topic, when it is actually being discussed in the topic titled "Lost and Confused" in which many cases are already documented. Don't know who's insulting or ridiculing you.

Yes, and speaking of which, I thank you for your reasonable justification of making a new topic for a problem that deserves a topic.

...At any rate...I have had two battles against Ben_star, both of which I led in tile count. When the final day of the battle was over, I lost the battle though my tile count was higher. For the first battle, MintMan asserted that his log was not 13 to 10, as I saw it, but rather 16 to 13 or something like that.

I have tested and rejected the erroneous possibility that the error is due to problems pertaining to cache and history. The hypothesis of possible hacking has also been parried away, which means that the log is correct.

Therefore, it is only rational to conclude that some factor is intervening in the appearance of accurate battle results for both parties. What I am guessing is that, in both of my battles, Ben_star must have deployed a troop and consequentially seen the correct battle information, whereas I still saw that he apparently did not deploy a troop.

For further reference, it may be of importance to note that in both of these battles, I only deployed one troop, leader not counted. I invaded, Ben_star replied to my challenge and deployed his leader, then I deployed a second unit since I had the tile deficit. What really happened after that, I know not. Also, I don't know how much it may help, but I also set my e-mail settings to send no e-mail notifications, if this could in any way be related to anything.

  Yeah, here's the thing... no.

Eagle, I have already explained the only cause of the problem: variable interference within the shell run of the script. Running the program in a loop over every embattled terrain is most likely leaving some junk data that was unaccounted for in the sea of pointers. The display isn't messed up since it uses the exact same function as the shell script to figure tile count.

Then, this entire topic is sorta worthless. It does no good to say "I had a problem here." It was when this mess first began, 'cause that told me there was a problem. It does very little to say that there was a problem in a fight that no longer exists; there is nothing to examine except for results that say nothing is wrong.

Rather, I needed my internet connection back so that I could script an advanced debugging API and log system to recreate battles (or create fictitious ones on the fly) in order to narrow the cause to what the nature of the problem is.

Of course, you can save me a lot of time by just telling me that you are going to have this error before it happens. Any takers?

  Then how about this problem?

The rules state that if you challenge someone and they don't respond in five days, you take the land. I've stood on the Broken Gate for a week (Jun 9-Jun 16). What gives?

Um... because the battle script didn't run tonight?

Y'know, there have been Cron problems all around. I mean, this did just happen -- what -- a week ago or so? It has gotta be in one of these topics still...

  Edit:
Whoa! Actually, it was something else entirely different and wacky. This has me wondering now... just what was going on? It seemed as though the script reverted to a past version!

Sorry, Minty, but I've encountered another problem! When you ran the script, I got a message saying that the Broken Gate was forfeited automatically to me. Here's the sticker: Matrakyon still owns it! It says he owns it on the map, and that I don't own it on my "World Domination" page. My batallion is still stationed there, however, and I am given the option to march and withdraw.

  Now what gives?!?

Sorry, Foshi...the great Cheese Faerie of Doom has chosen you to be her next victim!...Not.

I guess Shadora just needs a month or four for debugging, seeing as it's a relatively new game. I mean, c'mon, I wasn't around when BD was at version one, but I'm sure that it was full of bugs...it still has some occasionally, but hey, at least there are not that many problems.

  Oh get out!

It doesn't need debugging, Eagle. All this stuff worked fine when it came out in March or whatever.
After all of those mysterious BD errors, I am really starting to chalk this up to some sort of Perl change my server hasn't told me about. I mean, how else can a script run on the same data produce two separate results -- one errant and with no member data, and the other working fine? That's IO, not programming.

This one, as I had mentioned, seems to be stemming from the fact that the script reverted to a debugging stage with some pretty key stuff commented out (which I no longer even do since I added a safety flag).

Hey, Minty... hope you get that script running soon... good luck!

By the way, I just retreated from our battle at the Torgy. It should be your land... guess what, it's not. Go ahead, take it, you won it.

And about the reverted scripts... you didn't save your updated scripts in a different location, did you?

  No, I don't.

Technically, the version that is up was never saved. It was something that I would have done using shell access to the site. It was, like, a reversion through a back-up process or something.

Like I said, my server is updating something that I don't think I use, but it is having noted effects. IO and other issues could easily be some of the problems.

I didn't take it? When did you retreat? I know you blokes were sayin' somethin' or the other... waitaminute....

Great, I have no friggin' clue what's going on now. The BD problems are back, too, right after I added a segment to kill a script on faulty IO. This means that the problem is non-IO related. Who the Hel is opening the battle file if it ain't the battle script?!?

Whenever somethiing this bad starts happening when I am coding, I delete everything and start from the begining. Just my thoughts on what you can do.

I take it that none of your stuff ever took six months to code then.

Besides, that would only work if I also deleted every member file to account for whatever new format I came up with. (Well, delete or convert.) In addition, it would only be useful if this wasn't IO/server/reversion-related, 'cause otherwise, I'd just be wastin' another half-year of my life.

Thanks for your input, tho'.... maybe... not really Tongue

So... you're having problems with IO, the server, and the reverted scripts? That's right up there with your worst nightmares, isn't it?

Everything's broken down... this isn't a sign of the Apocolypse, is it?
