I'm confused. How do specials work, how do you use them?

Some specials are automatic and take place as soon as a monster is set on the terrain, such as Tragkrios' special, Serenade:
No enemy placed within two spaces of Tragkrios will be able to use specials.
Other specials are activated. You will see a checkbox next to the monster's name after you have placed him. To use the special, you need to check the checkbox and select the tile (or area) that you want his special to affect. This is the case with an Unscur's special ability, Shadow Darts:
Unscur may select one opponent within three spaces of itself to shoots its Shadow Darts at, which deal Chaos damage.
I think it is pretty self explanitory if you read the special descriptions in each case. Some monsters, Ukabaton for one, has multiple specials, if you read the description it's very easy to tell which ones are automatic and which are activated.
Ukabaton is immune to any special abilities a Parasite may have. When placed, Ukabaton will destroy any enemy parasites that exist within two squares. As a final measure, Ukabaton may select to destroy any parasite placed on the battlefield.
If you see the word select chances are its an activated special.
