Question do you get more xp from defeating opponents or taking over more tiles with your creatures or is there a set amount for a win/loss?

Quite simple: nothing in the game gives you any experience. It simply does not exist. 'Tis called "Score" in Shadora remnant from the shooter game, just like a classic video game should before them pesky RPGs.
In fact, some primitive RPGs use the old school Score and Point label over XP.
Anyhoo, no, there is not a flat rate for win/losses. That would be quite stupid, wouldn't it? You could just bring a guy to battle, never use 'em, and he'd level up! I think you can tell, too, by the fact that after a battle, everyone has a different amount should tell ya something...
You get score for killing, hitting, taking over tile, and being used in a fight. Don't let that last one make you think you should try to get every one of your monsters used in a battle; using them racks up wounds, and if they get attacked, they get even more. Don't even get me started on when taken-over tiles get double-conquered on an enemy... then you just racked up a whole buncha wounds!
The moral of the story: keep doin' what you're already doin'.
