Yah, really you need to figure a good way of doing smilies that won't get typed by accident - on Ikonboard for example !) also counts as a winking smily, so when someone stypes stuff like:
Blah blah (Trust me it totally rocks!)
It makes a smily on the end... the best way to make a good smily code is to have it in a bracketted object, although the smily-fanatics won't like it...
Edit: God damn, you're stupid slanted mouth code kept screwing up my image URL for my sig...

Well, here's the thing. Originally, I had this huge hashtable that held all smiley equivilents... but it wasn't working for some strange reason. So I had to type out all smiley-conversions things by hand. Then I realized potential problems, so I have to put in a white-space recognizer that only allows smileys to be made of surrounded by white-space on at least one side... but then I come to the problem again of how much code that would require.
I need to find a way to get those freakin' things in a hash table that will recognize them. Until then, just click the Smiley Code box "off". That option is available to you.
And Sanis, some of those Smiley's you tried didn't work because they weren't on the list. Makes sense, no?
But that frowny face looks to be just plain broken. Wonder why that is...

It's easy to do it with PHP ^_^
For a direct replace X with Y:
$Message = ereg_replace(" ", "Smily URL", $Message);
Or for start/end tags:
$Message = preg_replace("/(\[tag\])(.*)(\[\/tag\])/U","HTML to replace it with \\2 = content", $Message);
