As I said earlier I'm gonna get my own decent hosted spot - I've found a great deal on ProHosting.com:

  - Basic price $18 (£12) per month
  - 200Mb space
  - PHP4/MySQL
  - 15Gb Bandwidth
  - UPS and Tape backup systems (tape's done once a day)
  - Loads more stuff (like CGI and POP3 E-mail)

  I can add 50Mb space to that for $5 a month, and 5Gb bandwidth for $5 a month - I cna also buy sub-domains, but I don't need that...

...however, I need a domain name (it's not part of the package), and the one I mention in the title seems to be the only appropriate one I could find that is still available... your thoughts?

  Here's a suggestion: Your-Site.com.
It's only $5 a month and $20 a year for a domain name (which you own; not the site).
That's the only thing I could possibly think of. Of course, this site has only 6 Gigs of transfer and 50 MB of space default, but it has that same five-dollar increase policy.

Dude, do you really need that much transfer? I mean, this forum takes about one MB a day, and there are 1,024 MB per Gig and six of those a month seems all that would be needed.
I mean, even if you needed that much bandwidth for a game or something, most sites still disallow consuming chat-like scripts save MUD hosts...

Yeah, that sounds pretty good for a name.

When you buy, go to DomainMonger.com. $17 a year for domains there(as opposed to 45 if you go to the classic Register.com). And they are ICANN certified, so they can be trusted(I've used them the past two years for my domain)

Hmm, few things wern't very clear:
Is extra HD space 10 cent PER Mb, or 10 cents for a 50Mb block? (although thats $5 for a 50Mb block anyway like the one I found)
Why does it say "0" MySQL database support? - is it suggesting that for EACH database you pay $3, otherwise it'd be cheaper to use the one I found (Maps DB, User DB, Character DB, Item DB - thats over $12 already etc etc)

Anyway, I've E-mailed them asking about the MySQL thing, and if they want a new customer they should answer my question =p

Is it just me or are the inhabitants of the RE forum going domain crazy?

Not domain crazy; move crazy. We need out of F2S desperately, and the only one's who can meet our needs are pay sites in which you usually need your own domain.
I only need one because I'm tired of losing members to un-updated linkage :/

Man, databases? Isn't that just a lazy persons way of doing something you could do with Perl and a lot of time?

When you store files in ASCII format via CGI you need to use a series of safety file locks to prevent file corruption in case they're re-written before the next re-writer has fully loaded the data (If you havn't been using them in REL that'd explain the occasional profile deletions when on slow server times)

Same goes for PHP you need to setup safety locks. If you use MySQL on the otehr hand, there is no safety issues since the MySQL systems handle it, mySQL works faster since it uses a kind of psuedo socket system, and mySQL also takes up far less space than ASCII storage (I have a feeling it doesn't actually count on my main webspace quota since it's stored seperatly.) And allows me to store literally hundreds of thousands of pieces of data, and this is then protected by a username/password system so it can't be connected to externally (remember when I hacked the Crater UBB? - you cna't do that kind of thing with MySQL (The PHP script passes the username/password/database name to the server, which then accesses the DB, it cna't connect from outside my domain, and you can't SEE the PHP code from client side, so you can't steal the pass/username))

Um, actually, there is the flock() statement which stops two scripts from trying to access one file at a single time. It works near flawlessesly (I never had a problem with it on Virtual Avenue).
Even before I actually moved to F2S, if I was the only person at my site at a given time and writing to a file, it would just quit in the middle of the process and stop writing the file. It isn't the CGI -- it's the fact that F2S is an experimental server (since TJ's PBS never had this problem, I figure they must have different procedures on different servers of theirs -- I must have got some sucky luck-of-the-draw).

More space and time, yes, but I'm cheap, so I'll keep my ASCII Perl.
