This will porbably fall on deaf ears since it seems I'm the only guy here who knows jack about 1st person RPG's.

But just on the off chance I'll post it anyway...

...I recently found that System Shock 2 has a co-operative mode (with the V 2.1 patch) that can be played over the net - and I'm trying to get together a gang of folks who want to meet up online to play online as a team - if I can pull it off it'd be wicked, 1st person survival horror with a gang of people who know each other - makes other large group RPG's look pathetic (AD&D eat your heart out).

For those who dunno what System shock 2 is:
System shock 2 is a first person survival horror, it's actually the fore-runner of Deus Ex really, but it has a horror storyline rather than a conspiracy one, if I can set it up to play online, picture this...

A large group of people (players) stranded aboard a spaceship full of weird parasitic aliens, struggling desperatly to get control of the ship, no immediate form of escape, at the very start of the game having only the most basic tools (If you're a marine you'll have a sidearm, if you're OSA you'll have a psi-amp, if you're a naval technitian, you have NOTHING) - from that situation, the team has to work together to get together resources, materials, train their skills etc to get control again (We're not talking shooting your way out here).

It's full RPG, you gain skills which can be assigned, it's simulated at every level, weapons jam and need reapirs and maintanence, you can hack into the security and mainframe computers, take the organs of slain monsters and research the creatures weaknesses and what it is exactly, theres a wide range of psionic skills that are more than just "guns with different graphics" - the story has the usual array of unpredictable twists, it's a great piece of storytelling as well as a great game period - shame the graphics kind sucks

Is it a PC game? It sounds pretty cool, but does it cost anything? I'm sure it does, so that's sort of a stupid question, but still. I don't really want to spend money on much now, as I need to spend more on GameCube stuff.

I don't care much for consoles, I give a s*** about the games, now this baby sounds f_cking sweet, I suck at shoot em ups, but it sounds weird, but I reckon that some of them have some of the best story lines - exept for the fact that you only get a minute of story every hour or two.
Mate, tell me how the hell I can get my greasy mits on this b_tch and you got a playing partner.

It was designed as a single player but they added a co-operative play option.

One of my contacts in Australia got it in the bargain bin for AU$19, it's probably quite cheap now, playing online hasn't any fees, but it uses a Host/Client configuration, so the guy who hosts will need a fastish computer and a good connection (My contact in Oz I mentioned has Cable :) )

Well, this on-line game sounds unlike most others in that in doesn't have some of the biggest flaws. For one thing, you don't have any idiots you don't want to since it is only has a group of your friends playing. Another, its free to play. That's always good.
Now, there were some things that Ryuujin said that were incorrect. For one, this cannot be a "full RPG" as the term has been most forgotten through the ages. A full RPG normally has to be pen-and-paper. The closest compy alternative is a MUD, but those have so many commands that no graphical game could ever pull it off at our current restriction of technologies. Also, D&D will always be the raining RPG. This actually doesn't even sound like an RPG (or at least as much an RPG as, say, Syphon Filter). This sounds more like a first-person shooter with "magic" and a plot.

Well, seeing as how I'm not much into on-line games anyway and the very fact that I have a pile that has got to be over ten games waiting to be beat that I have collected in the past three-odd years, I'll keep my current stance and not get involved.
I bet this thing is just like Counterstrike: it's inter-crack!

Hey, that is a major insult comparing it to Counter Strike...

...In counter strike it was deathmatch with extra rules, I played SS2 online for the first time today, I can't compare the gameplay to any 1st person game, in fact the gameplay was more like that of a multiplayer RPG such as Diablo 2 or PSO, but it was far more intresting - one thing many RPGs lack is the player abilties.

In games such as Diablo 2 you'd go town occasionally to buy better weapons, or repair your outfit since there arn't skills to keep you in the field, but in SS2 your stuck totally on the spaceship, everything has to be worked out and done and learnt by your team.

After todays testing sessions the team looks something like this:

  Name: Booga Boy
  Class: Navy geek
  Attributes:
  - Skilled in the research fields and is researching the alien lifeforms
  - Total hacker freak, nothing is safe, just glad he ain't blown anyone up yet by accident...
  - Has basic understanding of standard ballistic weapons, but sucker shot (my bullet proof caught at leats 2 bullets of his)

  Name: Thor
  Attributes:
  - None worked out, he's a newbie and doesn't know what there is to do, probably fit in between me and Booga

  Name: Ryuujin
Class: Marine who should really be part of the OSA
  Attributes:
  - Has limited psionic powers (Mostly metacreative)
  - Expert in energy weapons
  - Very capable in repairs and maintenance of the weapons, and can recharge the teams powered hardware

Just kinda wondering, since when did you see a first person shoot em up, or another hollow multiplayer that had profiles that looked like that? - counter strike at best a character cna be defined as a "sniper, assault, etc" - there are virtually no team based online games that require that degree of team skill realism.

And the level of teamwork needed is amazing - since items are resources are hard to come by you need to work closely with your comrades, and the results can be quite interesting - for example I'd accidently tripped a security system and me and booga were held up ina small room with monsters coming in all sides - I'm a very fast character, so I ran out under cover fire from booga, and managed to overide the security computer deactivating the alarms. To much smaller things, such as finding a jammed and useless gun, taking the ammo out of it and giving it to a team member who might find it useful - without that kind of interactions you'd never get off the ground. In this respect System shock 2 is more reminisent of the friendly social environment of a pen and paper RPG.

Anyway, for the doubters here I was gonna take screenshots "documenting" the team ^_^

i don't want to get off subject but there's another online game, one thing though it's an rpg...it's a great game anyway i guess i should tell u the name right......well it's called Well Of Souls. it's a very interesting game that is long....only one problem, so far they haven't made an ending for it, but it's constantly updated with patches so it will eventually come.another good feature is that you can make your own world if you start to get bored of evergreen (the world the game comes with) also new worlds are downloadable.
as for gameplay it's played either online or solo.and when online you can gather with friends and do battle in a group.

Anyway if you think u want this game, or just want information about it go to synthetic-reality.com

this site has other games to download but that's the best......so far
i bet this post was a stupid one....well maybe...
