Say I have some artwork, in this case a pencil sketch (anime styled) what would be the best way of going about coloring it in? Like what would be the best computer way, and what would be the best normal way, without ruining the picture (like would I have to ink and then color it? or is there another way because that constitutes ruining a sketch in my book). This would be for a heap of my artwork which I am planning on uploading to a deviant account when I get around to making it

Entirely depends. If it is a true-to-life sketchy-sketchy complete with shading, there really isn't a way to physically color it. If you did (and I don't even know how without most likely uglifying it), you would most likely ruin it as aforementioned.

Inking it really would be coloring, and it may or may not help, especially if you want to digitize it. It really depends how handy you are with a pen -- or how much you desire to practice.

On a computer, go with GIMP or Serif Paint Plus. Why waste money on garbagé like Photoshop?
Once inside and scanned, create a layer over your bescanned image. Set this layer to (most likely) Multiply or Colorize and add your colors to the image through a brush or by selecting and filling regions. That's what Gobbs and I do to get our stuff. (And indeed, all non-BD artwork on this site is done that way.)

If you don't shade, tho', then there are other, sucky ways to do things -- what I call the "one-click-make-look-good" method I assume exists on Photoshop since everyone's digital art looks exactly the same to me.

Yeah, I'll have to try that. No confusing me here. And I do have a Boggle legal copy of Photo Cs2 9 or something like that...but it lags the computer so I have never bothered to learn to use it..and yes my system is rather antique..

I'd send you an excellent page on EXACTLY the best way to scan and color sketches...but the rest of the site isn't exactly for those of the under 18 variety...but it is one page that I do go to ACTUALLY read the articles.
