i try and try and try, but recently i can only lose. couple more battles and i will have lost 10 battles in a row. is this normal?

Anyway, chances are that you just suck. A lot of people have this problem. Try doing it less.
For example, you fought a Garm in your last fight... a Garm.... a Bestial Garm.... against your Serpent..... Weakness!!!
In the future, suck less by actually fighting something that you are not weak against. For example... Monoceros.
