What is Battling Dragons?
Battling Dragons (abbreviated BD or sometimes REBD) is an entirely free on-line game in which members raise monsters from mythology. The game chronicles a Keeper, a sorcerer who has mystic ties to a Familiar, a monster that follows its master faithfully. Together, they battle other members in order to become the strongest in the world.
Who made Battling Dragons?
The one known as Kero Kato, the Apothecary, Rex Ranarum, the Blue Clad Vagrant, and, in the world of Battling Dragons, Geirrek created and coded Battling Dragons entirely by himself.
How did you make Battling Dragons?
Battling Dragons was made using Perl and JavaScript. Timing for scripts was done using Cron. This is an effort younger than this entire site by only one month's time.
Who are the artists for Battling Dragons?
Most of the artwork was made by Geirrek, the creator of BD. This includes a bulk of the monsters and all of the Bestiary sketches. His two brothers, Bimblesnaff and Six Grey, are the other two main artists for monsters. You can find the artist who made a particular monster listed in the Bestiary.
When did you make Battling Dragons?
Battling Dragons was first released on July 9th, 1999, under the name Reality's End Adoption Center. This makes Battling Dragons younger than the Reality's End site by little over one month.
What version is Battling Dragons currently on?
Battling Dragons is currently on its fourth version, code named NDR: the Nidafells' Dragon Rises, after the only original adoptable monster.
The first version was barely even a game. It was a simple, animated Nidhogg that flapped its wings a little bit. This lasted one year.
The second was the first that used CGI to allow the only monster -- Nidhogg still -- to grow and fight. This version did not even make a full year before the dreaded incident...
After the first CGI-allowing host completely crashed on Reality's End, deleting all members, the ideas that balled up for the third version were quickly put into use. This was the longest standing version, but in my opinion, one of the worst. It had too many carry-overs from the entirely non-stragegic second version.
After three years, the fourth edition was released, ridding of many of the RPG elements that were added with the previous version and replacing them with more on-line-battle-appropriate tactics, such as three energy meters in place of magic points.
How do I get bonus relics/make tourneys?
There are three ways to earn points towards purchasing bonus items in Battling Dragons:
- Participate in tournaments
- Write for the RPeX/REWS
- Regain points every week after spending them
Since your spent points will slowly regenerate after you spend them on items, it is best to purchase bonus items often; if you have no points spent, you have nothing to regain!
