The Unicorn resembles a pure white horse with a single, spiraling horn protruding from the middle of its forehead. It has a goat's beard and a lion's tail. It is a reputed defender of wooded areas and their inhabitants. The Unicorn is quite possibly the most renown of all mythological monsters. Alicorn, the horns of the Unicorn, are said to possess powers. When a Unicorn dips its horn into a tainted water supply, it is made pure. Severed from the head, the horn will fetch a high price although the Unicorn will soon die without it. Aside from its rarity, gratings from a horn into a cup will reveal whether or not its contents have been poisoned. Like the Monoceros, the Unicorn traces its origins to a single monster that later diverged into two. Its mythical brother was given the ruthless, lesser traits in medieval bestiaries while the Unicorn retained the gentleness and better properties.
