In Myth:
Tiamat is a Babylonian dragon-goddess who ruled over a primordial, chaotic, salt-water sea. She was the mother of the gods whom she later attempted to kill and was eventually killed by. She was also the mother of monstrous serpents with poison instead of blood and commanded eleven types of monsters including fish-men, scorpion-men, sea serpents, hounds, rams, hurricanes, and Lahamu. Her scales were impervious to any weapon.
SerpentIn the creation epic Enuma Elish, we are told on the first few tablets of the creation of the world and of Tiamat, from whom the earth is formed. Before the land and sky, there was only a chaotic sea. She and her good children warred. Tiamat possessed the Tablets of Destiny, which made one's words come true, and a spell that bestowed power. Eventually, she was slain by Marduk when he trapped Tiamat in a net, aided by the four winds, and pierced her heart through her gaping mouth, which was not invincible.
The name of the Tiamat is said to be related to the Hebrew tehom, "The Deep," as in the sea. In Sumerian, the names breaks down easily as "ti" (life) and "ama" (mother) with a feminine ending ("at").

Creator's Notes:
Tiamat marks the first time a single member of Reality's End (Lieutenant Eagle) was allowed to choose the next new species for Battling Dragons as part of the first King of Years tournament. Although the tournament took place around the turn of the year, it was not until May that Eagle made up his mind, thus the long delay.
Also unique about Tiamat is the length of time that separated it from the previous monster release (Bennu) more than a year ago. This even outdoes the wait between Nidhogg and Hrimfaxi (which marked BD's change from a one-species game to a multiple species one), which was exactly two years, by weeks. It should be noted that B-Monsters were still created during this time, and that the Bennu was not even finished until few months prior to the Tiamat's creation.
Also unique about this monster (at least among monsters the webmaster creates) is the fact that it was released after all images were made. Typically, young forms are released for adoption before the older forms are even drawn. This system proved extremely faulty for Bennu and will probably be employed no more.
The entire thought process behind Tiamat was recorded diligently in the Monster Making Guide for Battling Dragons and will not be repeated here.
