In Myth:
There were two basic types of Japanese dragons -- the tatsu and the ryu. While tatsu is a more general term for a dragon, the Ryu was said to be able to live in air, water, and on land, and is considered to be a sacred creature.
Japanese dragons were varyingly described with parts of several animals: head of a camel, eyes of a rabbit, horns from a deer, paws of the tiger, and talons of an eagle. Their bodies were long and winding and covered in the scales of a carp.
Japanese dragons possessed three claws on each appendage; Korean dragons had four; Chinese, five. It has been explained that the further west dragons travel, the more claws they have. This is why none are seen further than China, for then the dragon would have too many claws to travel.Carp
The dragon's head was covered in whiskers. Under their chins, a magic jewel was kept from which all their power came from. They could ascend to the heavens on reverse waterfalls. A dragons breath was a mist. They could shift boths their shape and their size, and dragons could vanish from sight. Ryu could fly despite not possessing wings.
Dragons were also associated with the weather, especially, rain, storm, and clouds. The dragon king Ryuujin kept the Tide Jewels that controlled the ebb and flow of the seas. The water was the earthly home to dragons when away from the heavens.
The ryu was the enemy of the Ho-oh, the phoenix, which was foe to all things serpentine and said to devour them.
Oriental dragons have varied life cycles, and varying descriptions as to the amount of years they spend in each form. Sometimes, even the order which they progress through these stages changes. Typically, it looks something like this: a gemstone-like egg, a dragon-carp, a water serpent, a young dragon, and finally a fully grown, adult dragon.
