In Myth:
This mischievous weasel hails from Japanese folklore. The Kamaitachi moves so quickly that none know its true form. Even though it has never been seen, it is still somehow known to be a weasel. This whirlwind demon is variously described with sickles for legs, a tail, teeth, or on some location on its body, sometimes even carried.
The Kamaitachi travels in packs of three, finding travelers in the mountains of northern Japan. They would stay hidden from site, and then spring out with incredible speed, hiding from vision in the wind in the wind. The first would knock down a person, the second would cut a deep gash into the victim, and the third would heal the wound. The entire assault leaves the victim with but a bloodless wound.
It has been discovered that this strange creature is based on a natural phenomenon. Vacuum pockets of volcanic gas in the mountains of Japan occasionally burst. The gas speeds along the ground and, when it comes upon contact with human flesh, gashes the victim. So fast does this happen that no blood comes from the wound, thus giving it the illusion that it was healed. The only presence given by the entire event is the loud, popping sound of the gas escaping.
The name Kamaitachi translates into "Sickle Weasel" ("Kama" = "Sickle", "Itachi" = "Weasel").
