NameChimaera
AlternateChimera
ClassificationHybrid Lion, Goat, & Serpent
OriginGreek
In Myth:
According to Homer, the Chimaera was a large monster with the foreparts of a lion, body of a goat, and hindparts of a serpent. It vomited flame. It was one of the many children of Echidne and Typhon, making it brothers with such other Greek monsters as the Hydra, Cerebus, and Nemian Lion.
The Chimera was once the pet of the king of Caria. It escaped and fled to Lycia where it terrorized any and all living things until the hero Bellerophon came to slay it. Riding the winged Pegasus, he thrust a spear into the beast's mouth. The heat of its breath melted the point, choking the monster on molten metal.
In Hesiod's Theogony, the Chimera had been changed as to having the heads of a goat and snake arranged behind its lion head along its back. It was this change that eventually lead to the Chimera's name being equated with the impossible.
The Chimera was once a storm deity. The name of Chimaera means "goat."

Future Development:
Artist Bimblesnaff has expressed interest in making the Chimaera not because he actually likes it, but rather because he does not want some other artist to draw it for BD with its improper three heads. Correct or not, I would like to see the Chimaera have three heads in its final form. The Basilisk was never supposed to be a chicken, but if it never did, we wouldn't have the Cockatrice. Different versions and transformation of tales is just part of folklore...
